DULI YANG MAHA MULIA PADUKA SERI
SULTAN YUSSUFF IZZUDDIN SHAH
(MARHUM GHAFARULLAH)
SULTAN PERAK KETIGA PULUH DUA
(1948-1963)

Sultan Yussuf Izzudin Shah telah diputerakan di Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar pada 15 Januari 1890 dan Baginda mendapat pelajaran mulai di Sekolah Melayu kemudian melanjutkan pelajarannya di Sekolah Inggeris Hogan (Sekolah Clifford) dan akhirnya di Maktab Babu'd-Darjat (Kolej Melayu).

Setelah tamat pelajarannya dalam tahun 1911, Baginda masuk berkhidmat sebagai Pelatih Pegawai Melayu di Pejabat Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri Perak di Taiping, kemudian bertukar menjadi Pemungut Cukai Tanah dan Hakim di Kuala Kangsar. Baginda juga pernah menjadi Pengawas Jajahan Kecil Parit dan Bruas, dan juga di Pejabat Perbendaharaan Negeri. Pada masa berkhidmat dalam jawatan-jawatan itulah Baginda telah beroleh pengetahuan dan kemahiran dalam hal pentadbiran negeri.

Pada tahun 1919, Baginda dilantik menjadi Raja Di Hilir Perak dan bersemayam di Ipoh dan kemudiannya pada tahun 1921 Baginda telah dilantik menjadi Raja Bendahara Perak dan bersemayam di Istana Bendahara Ipoh. Dalam tahun 1924 Baginda mula masuk berkhidmat dalam Pasukan M.V.I (Malayan Volunteer Infantry) Negeri Perak dan mencapai pangkat Lieutenant, hingga tahun 1933. Setelah berhenti dari pasukan M.V.I Baginda masuk F.M.S.V.F. (Federated Malay States Volunteer Forces) cawangan Negeri Perak sebagai Pegawai Simpanan.

Pada tahun 1934 Baginda berangkat ke England bersama-sama Tengku Laksamana Alam Shah Selangor mengiringkan Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Shah, Sultan Selangor dan mengadap Raja Inggeris King George V.

Apabila Sultan Abdul Aziz ditabalkan menjadi Sultan Perak yang ke-31 pada tahun 1938, Baginda pula dilantik menjadi Raja Muda Perak dan bersemayam di Teluk Intan (Teluk Anson). Sebagai Raja Muda Perak Baginda dijadikan ahli dalam Majlis Mesyuarat Negeri Perak dan juga menjadi Naib Yang di Pertua Majlis Mesyuarat Orang-orang Besar dan Ulama-Ulama di Negeri Perak.

Dalam tahun 1938, Baginda telah dikurniakan bintang O.B.E dan tahun 1949 dikurniakan K.C.M.G oleh Ratu Inggeris King George V. Di samping itu Baginda menerima kurniaan Bintang Kebesaran daripada Raja Siam.

Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah telah dilantik menjadi Sultan Perak yang ke-32 menggantikan Almarhum Sultan Abdul Aziz (Marhum Ni'matullah) bergelar Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah dan bersemayam di Istana Iskandariah, Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar dan Baginda telah ditabalkan pada 16 April 1949. Kelambatan dijalankan Istiadat Pertabalan Baginda adalah kerana dalam tahun 1948, di negeri-negeri Melayu sedang sibuk dengan kerja-kerja berhubung dengan tertubuhnya Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.

Dalam tahun 1953 Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah berangkat ke England kerana menghadiri Istiadat Kemahkotaan Ratu Inggeris Queen Elizabeth Yang Kedua. Tiga tahun selepas itu, iaitu pada tahun 1956 Baginda berangkat sekali lagi ke England dan benua Eropah kerana beralih angin.

Pada 4 Januari 1963, Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah mangkat di Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, dalam usia lebih kurang 73 tahun. Jenazah Almarhum dimakamkan di Permakaman di-Raja Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar dan digelar "Marhum Ghafarullah".

Almarhum mempunyai putera dan puteri dan Sultan Perak yang ke-34 adalah putera Baginda.
